How lenders use it
Lenders use an intake agent for the work between the first enquiry and credit review. In many teams that work is done by hand. Staff read PDFs, retype figures, chase missing statements by email and check a company number on a register.
The agent takes that over. It reads each document as it arrives, finds the facts the lender needs and records where each one came from. It checks facts against each other and against outside sources, for example the company number against a register. It asks the applicant for anything missing in the same conversation.
The credit team then opens a file with the answers, the documents, the checks and the open questions in one place. Every fact points to its source, so the analyst can check it in seconds. The analyst still makes the decision.
An intake agent is not the lender's system of record. It sits in front of the loan origination system and can hand the finished file to it. Klarefi is one example of this kind of software.
Worked example
Example only. A broker emails a PDF pack for a £150,000 loan. The agent finds that the file has one month of bank statements where the lender needs three, and that the director's ID has expired.
It asks the broker for both in one message. When they arrive, it reads them, records the opening balances with their sources and checks the company number on the register. The analyst receives a complete file and starts on the credit view.
Common confusions
An intake agent is not a chatbot. A chatbot answers questions. An intake agent works through a case and produces a file.
It is not OCR or document extraction alone. Those tools turn a document into text or fields. An intake agent also checks the facts, finds what is missing and asks for it.
It is not a credit scoring or decision engine. Those tools produce a score or a decision. An intake agent prepares the information. A person on the lender's credit team decides.
Questions lenders ask
How is AI being used in loan origination?
Common uses are reading documents, pulling out facts, checking them against registers and asking applicants for missing items. Some lenders also use it to draft summaries. The credit decision stays with the lender's people.
Can AI do an underwriter's job?
It can do the preparation, which is the reading, the checking and the chasing. It should not replace the underwriter's judgement of risk. Many rules and customers expect a person to take the decision.
What is the difference between loan intake software and a loan origination system?
Intake software gets the application file complete. A loan origination system manages the loan from application to funding, including approvals, documents and payments to the borrower. Many lenders use both.
What does an intake agent need to be safe to use?
A source for every fact, a visible record of what it did, clear limits on what it can decide and a person who reviews the file. It should fail loudly when a step does not work and not guess.
