Loss ratio calculator
Enter the figures from a loss run, year by year, to see the loss ratio, how often claims happen, and the average claim. Everything stays in your browser.
NederlandsFigures are calculated on your device. Nothing is sent to Klarefi.
Enter premium and losses for at least one year.
Each prior insurer sends its loss run as a PDF in its own layout. Klarefi reads them all, adds them up, and checks them against the application.
Build your MGA intakeWhat a loss run shows
A loss run is an insurer's report of every claim on a policy: the date, the cause, what was paid, and what is still reserved. Brokers request one from each prior insurer, usually for the last five years, and attach them to the submission.
How to read one
Check the period each loss run covers and that the years connect without a gap. Look at open claims, because their reserves can still change. Match the policy numbers with the prior insurers listed on the application.
How the loss ratio is calculated
Loss ratio is incurred losses divided by earned premium. Incurred losses are paid claims plus open reserves. A loss ratio of 60% means that for every 100 of premium, 60 went to claims.
What this calculator does
It adds and divides the figures you enter. Reading the loss run PDFs, checking that the years connect, and comparing them with the application takes reading the documents.
Gaps underwriters chase in loss runs
- A year is missing between two loss runs.
- The loss run is months old, so open reserves may have moved.
- A prior insurer named on the application sent no loss run.
- An open claim has no reserve amount.

The application says 32 employees at one site. The loss run shows a claim at a second site. Klarefi reads the application, the loss runs, and the statement of values together, asks the broker about the second site in a chat, and adds the answer to the case file.
